In the world of water treatment, there are many nuanced terms used by industry experts that may be confusing to commercial and industrial property owners. The distinction between water filtration and water treatment is one such example. In this article, we’ll explore the differences between water treatment and water filtration, and in which situations you should choose one over the other.

What is Water Filtration?

Water filtration involves any system that physically removes suspended solids from water. There are many different types of water filtration systems available—from simple mesh strainers that capture larger solids to advanced cooling tower sand filters that remove even tiny particles. For industrial and commercial properties, water filtration systems are most often used in closed-loop cooling systems.

What is Water Treatment?

Water treatment is different from water filtration in that it addresses water impurities at the chemical level. Chemical water treatment is used in cooling towers, boilers, potable water systems, and anywhere else where the chemical makeup of water might result in scale, corrosion, or biological fouling.

Is Water Filtration or Water Treatment Right for Your Facility?

The right approach to protecting your water-using equipment and ensuring the water is safe will depend on a variety of factors, including your water’s chemical makeup and the engineering specifications of your building. Often, a combination of water filtration and chemical treatment is the ideal for addressing and preventing common problems.
